When the new Chromecast with Google TV was announced last year, Stadia was a strange omission from it’s list of apps (along with UK TV streaming apps All 4 and NowTV, but that’s a whole other story). At the time, the Stadia team at Google promised that Stadia would arrive on the new Chromecast with Google TV in the first half of this year. Yesterday, Stadia made good on that promise by announcing the updated Google TV app will be arriving on June 23rd. So by the end of this month, you’ll be able to play blockbuster titles like Cyberpunk 2077, DOOM Eternal, Hitman 3, Borderlands 3 and many more on the big screen, all without the Chromecast Ultra!
Alongside the flagship Chromecast with Google TV streaming device, Stadia will also be officially supported on the following devices later this month:
- Chromecast with Google TV
- Hisense® Android Smart TVs (U7G, U8G, U9G)
- Nvidia® Shield TV
- Nvidia® Shield TV Pro
- Onn™ FHD Streaming Stick and UHD Streaming Device
- Philips® 8215, 8505, and OLED 935/805 Series Android TVs
- Xiaomi® MIBOX3 and MIBOX4
If your Android TV device isn’t listed above, don’t panic! The Stadia team says that you’ll still be able to download the app, but you’ll have to opt into an experimental support mode in order to play Stadia. As you can probably gather by the ‘experimental support’ label, Google hasn’t been able to test every single Android TV device, so you may experience some issues. While, we don’t have the new Chromecast with Google TV, we do have a Sony Bravia smart TV which recently received a Google TV update, so we’re excited to try this out!
This is a great (if overdue) addition to the Stadia platform and hopefully it’s not too long until there’s a Stadia hardware bundle with the new Chromecast with Google TV too!
